Terms are used by the Numetric Dictionary to create associations between Tables and are the backbone of Datasets. For an overview of the Numetric Dictionary, see the Getting Started article Making Connections with Numetric Dictionary.
If you are using one of our connectors, Numetric will recognize any existing joins from the data source, and create Dictionary Terms based on the relationships in SQL.
To create a new Dictionary Term, follow the steps outlined below:
1. Navigate to the Dictionary section of Numetric. Here all of your existing Terms will be displayed. Clicking on the name of an existing Term will allow you to view and edit the Term details.
To create a new Term, click on the New Term button in the top right.
2. Begin by naming the new Term. Make sure the name is universal and easy to understand so that everyone in your organization will know what this Term is referencing.
3. Each Term is based on a unique Primary Key. Because each Primary Key can only be used once, you will select from a list of all unused Primary Keys. To make finding your desired Primary Key easier, you can search for the Primary Key using the search bar under Term Name, or you can use the filters located in the sidebar; this includes filtering by Source, owner, and category.
4. Once the appropriate Primary Key is selected for the Term, click Create Term in the top right corner of the screen.
5. You will now see the Term details screen. The sidebar contains metadata that you can enter about the new Term. This includes a description of the Term, an option to display either the newly created Term name or the Column name, as well as space for you to provide clean examples of what key fields for this Term look like. From this screen, you can add additional columns from other Tables that also contain references to this Term. This is where you have the ability to cross-reference the same values across multiple Tables or for those of you familiar with SQL, this is where you add foreign key relationships. To add a new column to this Term, click the Add Columns button in the top right.
6. The Add Columns screen contains all unused columns from each Table in Numetric that are the same Data Type. Check the box next to each column you would like to add to this Term. Because of the number of columns that will most likely appear, using the search bar and the filter options on the sidebar will help in locating the columns you would like to add.Note - in order for two columns to be joined, they must both be the same Data Type. If the column you are searching for is not appearing in the list, it is either because that column has already been added to an existing Term, or because it is not the same Data Type as the key associated with the term.
7. Once you have selected all of the columns you would like to add to the Term, click the Add Columns to Term button located in the top right corner.
For you database people, you'll recognize that what we've done here is identify the main, defining table for a key piece of data, and then identified the foreign keys that point to that defining table. You will also notice that we only perform left joins, and currently do not support multi column joins.
