Follow these instructions to complete an intersection left turn crash analysis using AASHTOWare Safety. Please note that not all turning movement crashes meet the pre-determined definitions used in the Manner of Collision (Turning Movement) filter. NOTE: Not all turning movement crashes meet the pre-determined Manner of Collision Turning Movement definitions.

Intersection Left Turn Crash Analysis in AASHTOWare Safety
Please note: This process can only be completed for one intersection at a time.
1. Open the Spreadsheet Tool and download it as an Excel file. To do this, select File from the top menu and Download>Microsoft Excel (.xlsx)
We recommend keeping this spreadsheet open in an easy-to-access window throughout this process. Throughout this process, you’ll make edits to this spreadsheet. Only the tables highlighted in yellow are editable—any table not highlighted in yellow should not be edited.
3. In the Dashboard, note that the Date & Time (Collisions Dataset) (Year) filter is set to a 5-year period, and the Traffic Signal (Y/N) filter is set to Yes in the top filter bar.
NOTE: Do not modify the date range or the traffic signal filter.
4. Using the top-left menu, navigate to Step 1.
5. Continuing down the right-hand menu, narrow down your area of interest by entering information in the following drop-down options:
City
County
District
MPO
Urban/Rural
Direction of Movement
Crash Year
6. Using the top-left menu, navigate to Step 2 and validate that the data populated in the tables displays as expected. This is where users can investigate specific crash types further.
7. Using the top-left menu, navigate to Step 3. Here, you’ll download the results listed in “Table 1: All Left Turn Manner of Collisions Combined” by clicking on the CSV button in the bottom left of the table.
8. Once the CSV file is downloaded download, open the file in Excel. Highlight columns A-L and copy these columns by either using CTRL+C or right-clicking and selecting copy.
9. Open the Spreadsheet Tool and navigate to the Table 1 tab. Once here, highlight cell A1 and paste the values in. The values can be pasted by either using CTRL+V or right-clicking and selecting paste.
NOTE: Do not select the entire worksheet to paste these values; if this happens, the columns and the formulas will be erased.
(In the “Table 1” tab, select columns A-L and paste the copied values.)
(Once pasted, table 1 displayed on the right side of the spreadsheet should automatically populate data.)
10. This process is repeated for the rest of the tables labeled 1-6 on the Step 3 page of the Dashboard. The data downloaded from the Dashboard tables will be pasted into the corresponding tabs labeled “Table X” in the spreadsheet tool. For example, the data downloaded from Table 2 in the Dashboard will be pasted into the corresponding tab labeled Table 2 in the Spreadsheet Tool, etc.
NOTE: Do not download the “Details by Manner of Collision” table. Only download the tables labeled “Table 1,” “Table 2,” etc. Ignore blank tables—only download and copy/paste tables with data into the spreadsheet.
11. Once you’ve pasted the Dashboard Tables 1-6 into the Spreadsheet Tool, navigate back to the Dashboard. Using the top-left menu, navigate to Step 4 and enter your chosen Intersection ID in the right-hand menu.
12. If you don’t know the Intersection ID, you can find your intersection using the map and the circle tool to select the intersection. Once the circle filter has been applied, your intersection will appear as the only drop-down option under Intersection ID (Signal ID) in the right-hand menu.
(The circle filter is applied on the map.)
13. Once the intersection has been selected from the right-side menu, delete the circle filter from the top filter bar.
(Delete the circle filter from the top filter bar.)
14. Alternatively, you can use the map search tool to locate your intersection. Simply enter the intersecting streets into the search and select the correct intersection. Once the intersection is displayed, hover your mouse over a crash dot, and the intersection ID will appear as a tooltip.
(Enter the intersecting street names in the map search tool.)
(Hover your mouse over a crash dot at the intersection to display the intersection ID.)
15. Once your intersection has been selected, scroll down the page to review the details of the Manner of Collision (Turning Movement) in the table. The dashboard also displays the number of pedestrian, bicycle, right-turn angle, and red light running crashes to provide a holistic view of the crashes happening at this intersection.
NOTE: Not all turning movement crashes meet the pre-determined logic for the Manner of Collision Turning Movement. In these instances, the value may be blank. Alternatively, some crashes may be assigned two Manners of Collision Turning Movements. Users can use the Raw Table download for audits for these types of crashes, which is discussed in further detail below.
16. Using the top-left menu, navigate to Step 5. Download the “Details by Manner of Collision” table by clicking the CSV button in the bottom left corner of the table.
(Download the Details by Manner of Collision Table from Step 5 in the Dashboard.)
17. Open the CSV file you just downloaded in Excel. Highlight columns A-L and copy them using CTRL+C or right-click and select copy.
(Copy columns A-L in the CSV file.)
18. Open the Spreadsheet tool and go to the “Intersection” tab. Highlight columns A-L and paste the values into A-L in the spreadsheet. The values can be pasted using CTRL+V or right-clicking and selecting paste.
(Once pasted, the tables to the right will automatically populate data.)
19. Navigate to the Guide tab in the Spreadsheet Tool, where you will conduct your analysis. Data should automatically be populated in the recommendation tables on the right. Input the details of the applied filters from the dashboard in the “User Applied Filters” table in the top left corner.
(The Guide tab in the Spreadsheet tool is where you’ll conduct your analysis. Be sure to input the Dashboard filters applied in the yellow highlighted table “User Applied Filters” found in the top left corner.)
NOTE: The Crash Details tab in the top-left menu of the Dashboard can be used to download the raw data from this analysis. This can be used to audit any crashes with no Manner of Collision Turning Movement assigned or crashes with multiple Manner of Collision Turning Movement assigned, as these results can skew the data.
