The New Jersey Department of Transportation has created the NJDOT Crash Data Dashboard to help visualize and share crash reporting information with the public. It can be accessed here: https://njdot.aashtowaresafety.net/njdot-crash-data-dashboard#/
How to Navigate the Dashboard
The dashboard is composed of three main areas: The top Filter Bar, the Quick Filters Sidebar, and the Metrics.
(The NJDOT Crash Summary Dashboard with the top filter bar (Red), Quick Filters Sidebar (Red), and Metrics (Green) Highlighted.)
Top Filter Bar
At the top of the dashboard is the search bar. The search bar serves two main functions: it displays the current filters applied to the dashboard, and it allows users to search for additional filters to apply.
When you open the dashboard, a date range filter is automatically applied. This can be modified by clicking on the date range and selecting a new date for the filter.
Any time a new filter is added, either through the top Filter Bar or the Quick Filters Sidebar, it will be displayed in the Search Bar.

Additional filters that don’t appear in the Quick Filters Sidebar can be added using the search bar by clicking on the Add Filter button from the Top Filter Bar and typing to search for a filter.
Any filter can be removed by clicking the X next to it.
The filter bar will remain persistent across the different tabs available in the dashboard. Once a filter is applied, users can navigate between the various tabs in that dashboard without having to reset the filters each time.
Note that added filters do not save when a user exits the dashboard.
Quick Filters Sidebar
The Quick Filters Sidebar contains a curated list of filters available in easy-to-use dropdown menus. To apply a filter from the sidebar, simply click on the dropdown menu and select the filter from the list. Users can either scroll through the list and select the desired value or type into the filter search bar to easily find the right value.
To view the Quick Filters, click the arrow on the far right of the screen to expand the sidebar.

The filters in the Quick Filter Sidebar are:
Year
Injury Severity
City
County
Municipality
Road Ownership
SHSP Emphasis Area
Tabs
The dashboard tabs allow users to navigate through the available dashboard pages. Each page has a different focus to give users insight into the crash data from various perspectives.
(Users can view the dashboard tabs by selecting their name, or using the arrows on the far right of the top navigation toolbar)
Switching tabs will not impact any filters you may have applied. It will only change the charts that are displayed in the metrics section of the Dashboard.
The tabs in the NJDOT Crash Dashboard are:
Home: Introduction to the NJDOT Crash Dashboard.
Identifying Trends: Educates users on the emphasis areas identified in New Jersey’s Strategic Highway Safety Plan.
People: Explore the person-level crash data.
Locations: View where crashes are happening.
Time: View when crashes are happening.
Road Conditions: Explore the roadway conditions during crashes.
Vehicles: View the vehicles involved in crashes.
Metrics
The Metrics section of the dashboard displays the data in a chart, graph, or metric. Each component of the dashboard updates automatically to reflect any applied filters. When the dashboard is opened, a date-range filter is automatically applied. Before adding additional filters, users are viewing the data for the entire state of New Jersey, in the specified date range.
When a location filter is applied, each metric updates to reflect the newly applied filter. In the example below, the dashboard is filtering the vehicles involved in crashes for Jersey City. Notice that the same metrics are present in both images; only the data has updated to reflect the filter change.

Anytime a filter is added (by any method), it will appear in the filter bar at the top of the screen.
