Michigan State Police (MSP) ingests crash narratives into Numetric, allowing users to explore the circumstances of the crash and conduct in-depth crash analysis in Crash Query. The crash narratives are accessible directly within the crash flyout and can be filtered as well.

Find Crash Narratives in the Flyout

Here's where to find the crash narrative in Crash Query:

1. In dots view, click a crash dot and review the responding officer’s account of the crash in the flyout.

2. In cluster view, click a crash cluster. The cluster will break down into smaller clusters until the flyout appears with a scroll option.

3. Users can select "Read More" to read the full narrative.

(The "Read More" Crash Narrative pop-up)

4. After gaining additional context from the crash narrative, users can exclude the crash from their query results. "Exclude this Crash" is an option in the Crash Narrative "Read More" pop-up and the top of the crash flyout menu.

How to Filter the Crash Narrative in Numetric

Additionally, the narrative can be filtered. This is helpful to find specific crash types that aren’t represented in the coded data fields. For instance, users can use the narrative filter for the keywords “fleeing” or “evading” to display crashes that may have involved an individual evading officers.

Here's how to use the Crash Narrative filter in Crash Query:

1. In the filter bar, select "Add Filter" and type "Crash Narrative." Select the filter to apply it.

2. Type the desired keyword to search the crash narrative.

3. Once the filter is applied, only crashes with the entered keyword in its crash narrative will display in the query results. The filtered keywords in the Crash Narrative filter will have an "Or" relationship.
