In Network Screening - Segments, all routes in Kentucky are subdivided into segments based on roadway attributes. This allows you to compare smaller portions of a roadway with similar characteristics in Network Screening rather than evaluating an entire route.

Segment Criteria

KYTC’s segmentation attributes are dependent on the roadway type, provided below:

Roadway Type: Rural Two-Lane

For a rural two-lane roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

  • Lane width

  • Shoulder width

  • Median width

  • Horizontal curve degree

  • Grade

Roadway Type: Urban Two-Lane

For an urban two-lane roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

Roadway Type: Rural Interstate/Parkway

For a rural interstate/parkway roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

Roadway Type: Urban Interstate/Parkway

For a rural urban/parkway roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

Roadway Type: Rural Multilane Divided

For a rural multilane divided roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

  • Shoulder width

Roadway Type: Rural Multilane Undivided

For a rural multilane divided roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

  • Lane width

Roadway Type: Urban Multilane Divided

For an urban multilane divided roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

  • Median width

Roadway Type: Urban Multilane Undivided

For an urban multilane undivided roadway, a new segment is created each time one or more of the following roadway characteristics change:

  • AADT

  • Lane width

After segments are created following the guidelines above, minimum and maximum segment lengths are used to ensure that segments are not too small or too large.

Min/Max Segment Lengths

  • Any segment that is < 0.005 miles will be added to the smallest adjoining segment.

  • Any segment that is > 10 miles will be segmented at the 10-mile mark.
