Disclaimer about Using Crash Data

The following is the agreement that every user must accept in order for them to use crash data. Please review it regularly.

The information contained on this web site is compiled from crash reports submitted to the Utah Department of Public Safety with post-processing by the Utah Department of Transportation. The Crash Studies Team at UDOT is committed to providing the highest quality crash data to customers. However, we cannot guarantee that all crashes are represented in the data nor can we ensure that all details pertaining to a single crash are accurate.

This website is provided for the purpose of identifying safety concerns, with the intent of funding low cost safety improvements. When using this data, always reference UDOT as the source with a disclaimer that includes “this data is protected under 23 USC 409.” Never disclose this information, or analysis that uses this data, in reply to any legal action.  UDOTcrash data is protected from discovery and shall not be admitted as evidence in any court.

Overview

Safety Analysis is optimized for analyzing a specific corridor or section of road to identify potential safety treatments. The tool can be used to compare segments and prioritize potential safety projects. Below is an introductory video, which explains the Crash Query, Network Screening, and Safety Analysis applications:

Analysis begins by entering a route and milepoint in the input boxes at the upper left. You can enter several segments and then file through them for performing analysis. Analysis is performed using the five tabs across the top of the page. When working in Safety Analysis, all data is pre-filtered to the segment that was entered and then selected in the left-side menu. The filter bar can be used to apply additional filters, but it will only filter and show data included in the initial segment filter. The five tabs are described below, including how they can be used in analysis.

Overview Tab

The overview tab presents high-level safety metrics. This tab does not respond to filters, but is static to provide a snapshot view of the segment. Each of the three Network Screening metrics is presented for any segments included in the route being analyzed. The crash totals and rates are shown, along with roadway data and a quick summary of any severe crashes that occurred on the segment.

Stats Tab

The stats view shows the same charts and data as the More Stats view in Crash Query. A chart for each roadway attribute is shown along with bubble charts showing the crash trends by year. Charts can be clicked on to apply filters just like in other applications.

Map Tab

The map view shows crash points on the map. Below the map is a chart showing the crash distribution by milepoint, and a chart showing crash types. The map tab is the most powerful view in the application. You can quickly explore each crash type within the segment and identify where crash patterns and concentrations exist. This will lead to a determination of locations for potential safety treatments.

Crashes Tab

The crashes tab shows crashes in tabular format. The table allows you to add or remove columns, sort by a column and view details for each individual crash record.

Benefit/Cost Tab

The benefit/cost tab allows you to perform a benefit cost analysis. Until a treatment is added, nothing will be shown in the benefit/cost tab. To create an analysis, click the “Add Treatment” in the top right corner. This can be clicked while on any tab in Safety Analysis. Before clicking, you should apply as many filter as necessary to limit the crashes you are viewing to those which will be impacted by your proposed treatment. Upon clicking, a dialog box will open showing all crashes that are included in the current filter. In this dialog box, you can remove any crashes that you don’t want included in the treatment (you can also remove crashes later in the process). Click Next, and a new dialog box will appear giving you the option to create a new treatment. In this box you can name the treatment, input the proposed project cost, add a service life, and the CMF. You can change all of these again at a later step. After clicking Add, you can see the summary of the crashes reduced, benefit, and B/C ration in the tab. Hovering on the row will reveal a pencil icon, clicking on this allows you to edit any of the parameters of the calculation. You can also click on each crash to view the details, and remove it from the analysis if necessary. By default benefit/cost assumes that you are including all years of data, it does not account for any date or year filters that are applied. This is a known problem that we are working on.
