Crash Query - Metrics

Quick breakdowns of the crashes in your query

Written by Lauren Miller

The Metrics tab gives you a quick breakdown of the crashes in your query, such as how many were at each severity level or in each type of weather. It updates every time you change your filters. You can also select which metrics appear.

The Sidebar opens to the Metrics tab by default. A blue line under Metrics, Chart Builder, or Raw Table shows which tab you're viewing.

Crash Injury Severity metric with its name, level, count, and percent labeled

(The parts of a metric: name, level, count, and percent)

  • Metric name: What the breakdown is about, such as Crash Injury Severity.

  • Level: What's being counted: Crash, Person, or Vehicle. For example, a Person metric counts the people involved, not the crashes.

  • Count: How many crashes (or people or vehicles) have each value.

  • Percent: What share of the total that is. The bar shows the same share visually.

Values with no matching crashes aren't shown.

ℹ️ Note: Some columns can have more than one value per crash. For example, a crash can list both Cloudy and Rain. When that happens, the percentages for that metric can add up to more than 100%.

See Every Value

Long metrics show the top values first. Click Show all to see the rest, and Show less to collapse the list.

Filter From a Metric

Click a value to add it as a filter. Crash Query adds the filter to the Filter Bar, and everything updates.

Not every metric is set up as a filter. If you're not sure, hover over the value first:

  • + Add a filter appears if the value can be added as a filter.

  • A tooltip tells you if it can't be filtered.

Choose Which Metrics Appear

  1. Click the gear icon (Manage Metrics) in the top-right corner of the Metrics tab.

  2. In Added on the left:

    • Drag a metric by its handle to change the order.

    • Click X to remove a metric.

    • Click Restore to Default to go back to your organization's default metrics, or Clear All to remove them all.

  3. On the right, select Crash, Person, or Vehicle from the menu, search for a metric, and click + to add it.

  4. Click Apply.

Your metric changes are saved with this query only. New queries start with your organization's default metrics. The metrics in this tab are the ones that appear in the reports you create from the query.
