GDOT - Countermeasure Logic

This article outlines all countermeasure logic used by GDOT in the Safety Suite of applications.

The following Countermeasures are available as filters in Numetric, and will appear as recommended countermeasures in Safety Analysis and are available as filters within each Numetric application. Each Countermeasure, its associated treatments, and the logic used to identify crashes associated with that countermeasure are documented below.


Clear Roadside

Lighting Improvements (Intersection)

Pedestrian Control (Intersection)

The following treatments are associated with the Pedestrian Control (Intersection) Countermeasure:

  • Upgrade Crosswalk to High intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) (Unsignalized Intersection, Pedestrian Crashes Only, CMF ID: 2922)

  • Install High Visibility Marked Crosswalks (CMF ID: 4123)

  • Convert WALK / DON'T WALK Pedestrian Signals to Countdown Signals (CMF ID: 5272)

  • Install raised crosswalk (CMF ID: 136)

  • Install Raised Median with Marked Crosswalk (CMF ID: 175)

  • Install transverse rumble strips as traffic calming device (CMF ID: 2705, 2707)

  • Install RRFB (CMF ID: 9024)

  • Change intersection from stop control multilane roundabout (CMF ID: 236)

  • Change intersection from stop control Right In - Right Out (RIRO) (Install J-Turn intersection) (CMF ID: 5555)

  • Change intersection from stop control signalized Continuous Green - T / (Install a traffic signal) (CMF ID: 8655/325)

  • Change intersection from stop control to reduced conflict u-turn (RCUT) (CMF ID: 4666)

  • Change intersection from stop control unsignalized High-T (Install median acceleration lane) (CMF ID: 2753)

  • Convert Intersection to a Roundabout (CMF ID: 1634)

  • Convert minor-road stop control to all-way stop control (CMF ID: 314)

  • Add flashers to warning sign (CMF ID: 1851)

  • Countermeasure: Install transverse rumble strips on stop controlled approaches in rural area (CMF ID: 2698)

  • Install intersection ahead warning signs (CMF ID: 1684)

  • Increase retroreflectivity of STOP signs (CMF ID: 6051)

  • Provide "Stop Ahead" pavement markings (CMF ID: 9072)

  • Add 3-inch yellow retroreflective sheeting to signal backplates (CMF ID: 1410)

  • Implement systemic signing and marking improvements at stop-controlled intersections (CMF ID: 8866, 8867)

  • Change from 5-section "doghouse" protected/permissive left turn to flashing yellow arrow protected/permissive left turn (CMF ID: 7694, 7695)

  • Change from permissive only to flashing yellow arrow permissive only (CMF ID: 7700, 7701

  • ADD 3-INCH YELLOW RETROREFLECTIVE SHEETING TO SIGNAL BACKPLATES (CMF ID: 1410)

  • Install Supplemental Signal Heads (Far Side Left & Near Side Right) on All Approaches (Atkins Study)

Roadway and Lane Departure Crashes

  • Install Wider Markings (without resurfacing) (CMF ID: 4792)

  • Remove or relocate fixed objects in clear zone (CMF ID: 1024)

  • Install Crash Cushion for Sign Structure/column (CMF ID: 55, 56, 57)

  • Upgrade existing markings to wet-reflective pavement markings (CMF ID: 8103)

  • Flatten side slopes and remove guardrail (CMF ID: 782)

  • Improve Shoulder; Pave (CMF ID: 9723)

  • Install Rumble Strips; Shoulder (CMF ID: 7267)

  • Provide 2-ft paved shoulders (both sides in Rural Areas)(CMF ID: 10400)

  • Install alternative audible lane departure warning treatments (not milled-in rumble stripes) (CMF ID: 9685)

Road Diet
