The Land Cover filter is available in the filter bar for the Georgia Department of Transportation in all applications. This filter lets users filter and view land cover classification information for specific roadways and crashes.

This data allows users to apply context classifications to their analysis. For example, instead of simply querying “rural” area crashes, users can now search for Rural Built Area crashes.

The Land Cover filter is based on 2023 ESRI Land Cover data, which classifies the developed status of land. The ESRI data used to create this filter categorizes land classifications in 10-meter sections. The classifications available for each section are:

  • Built area

  • Trees

  • Rangeland

  • Crops

  • Water

  • Flooded vegetation

  • Bare ground

More information about these ESRI class definitions and land cover data can be found here.

The land cover classification for the midpoint of a segment applies to the entire segment.

Note: Divided roadways may have different land cover results. For example, a northbound segment could have a different land classification than the opposing southbound segment.

How to Access the Land Cover Filter

1. Open an application in AASHTOWare Safety.

2. In the top left corner, select “Add Filter” and type in “Land Cover.”

3. Select applicable values from the list.

4. Apply filter.

(Example: Selecting a specific area, the Land Cover filter in Crash Query displays crashes having different cover classifications for the same area in Georgia)
