A written guide to navigating the NJDOT Crash Dashboard is available below.

How to Navigate the Portal

The portal is composed of three main areas: The top Filter Bar, the Quick Filters Sidebar, and the Metrics.

Top Filter Bar

At the top of the portal is the filter bar. It serves two main functions: displaying the current filters applied to the portal, and allowing users to search for additional filters to apply.

When you open the portal, a date range filter is automatically applied. This can be modified by clicking on the date range and selecting a new date for the filter.

Any time a new filter is added, either through the top Filter Bar or Quick Filters Sidebar, it will be displayed in the Filter Bar.

Additional filters that don’t appear in the Quick Filters Sidebar can be added using the filter bar by clicking on the Add Filter button from the Top Filter Bar and typing to search for a filter.

(Click “Add Filter” to see additional filter options in the top filter bar)

Any filter can be removed by clicking the X next to it. The filter bar will remain persistent across the different tabs available in the portal. Once a filter is applied, users can navigate between the various tabs in that portal without having to reset the filters each time.

Note that added filters do not save when a user exits the portal.

Quick Filters Sidebar

The Quick Filters Sidebar contains a curated list of filters available in easy-to-use dropdown menus. To apply a filter from the sidebar, simply click on the dropdown menu and select the filter from the list. Users can either scroll through the list and select the desired value or type into the filter bar to easily find the right value.

To view the Quick Filters, click the arrow on the far right of the screen to expand the sidebar.

The filters in the Quick Filter Sidebar are:

  • Year

  • Injury Severity

  • Common Filters

  • County

  • City

  • Road Ownership

Additionally, most of the charts can serve as interactive filters. By clicking on an element of a chart, you can apply the selected element as a filter to a chart. Anytime a filter is added (by any method), it will appear in the filter bar at the top of the screen.

Clicking the same element again removes the filter.

Tabs

The portal tabs allow users to navigate through the available pages. Each page has a different focus to give users insight into the crash data from various perspectives.

Switching tabs will not impact any filters you may have applied. It will only change the charts that are displayed in the metrics section of the Portal.

The tabs in the NJDOT Crash Portal are:

  • Home: Introduction to the NJDOT Crash Portal.

  • People: Explore the person-level crash data.

  • Locations: View where crashes are happening.

  • Time: View when crashes are happening.

  • Road Conditions: Explore the roadway conditions during crashes.

  • Vehicles: View the vehicles involved in crashes.

  • Raw Data: View the raw crash data used in the dashboard.

  • Help: Materials and resources to navigate the dashboard and understand the crash data.

Metrics

The Metrics section of the dashboard displays the data in a chart, graph, or metric. Each component of the dashboard updates automatically to reflect any applied filters. When the dashboard is opened, a the date range is automatically set to view crashes between 2019 and 2024. Before adding additional filters, users are viewing the data for the entire state of New Jersey, in the specified date range.

When a location filter is applied, each metric updates to reflect the newly applied filter. In the example below, the dashboard is filtering the vehicles involved in crashes for Jersey City. Notice that the same metrics are present in both images; only the data has updated to reflect the filter change.

Users can download pages as a PDF report. Click the download button in the top-right corner of the screen to open the report download options. From here, users can choose the portal tab to export and name the report. Click "Create Report" to bring up the Dashboard Preview page.
