Indiana DOT - How Intersections are Defined

Written by Lauren Miller

Indiana DOT provided intersection center points, which were used to create the intersections in Network Screening - Intersections. Indiana intersections follow the same criteria:

Intersection Legs:

  • Intersection leg definition: If a leg is within 50 feet of the center of the intersection, it will be included in the intersection.

  • Intersection leg overlaps are mitigated; if a leg of one intersection overlaps with a leg of another, the overlapped legs are shortened to half the length of the overlap.

Intersection Leg Lengths:

  • Intersection Legs in Urban Areas: 250 feet

  • Intersection Legs in Rural Areas: 500 feet
