Map Toolbar Overview

Written by Lauren Miller

Overview

Every map in Numetric includes a map toolbar. The toolbar lets users customize how the map displays, search for and zoom to locations, filter crashes by drawing shapes on the map, turn on boundary and asset layers, measure distances, and download the map.

The tools in the toolbar vary by app. This article covers every map tool available across Alternative Design, Crash Query, Advanced Network Screening, Network Screening, and Safety Analysis. To see which tools are in a specific app, refer to that app’s overview article.

The tools below are listed alphabetically, and each section notes which apps include the tool.

3D View of Crashes

Available in: Crash Query

3d view (not grayed out)

Use 3D View to generate a downloadable 3D map of crashes.

3D View only works when the map visualization is set to Heatmap & Clusters (in Map Settings) and the map is zoomed in far enough to show crash clusters. Until both are true, the 3D View button is grayed out.

When 3D View is selected, a 3D visualization of the crash clusters in the current map view appears, and a video popover opens at the bottom of the screen showing the rotating 3D map. To export the video as a WebM file, click the download button on the popover.

To adjust the 3D map settings, click the gear icon on the video popover. From here, users can:

  • Change the sort order to place the most severe crashes at the top or bottom of each 3D cluster.

  • Change the values of interest to focus on either crash count or crash cost.

Circle Tool (filter radius)

Available in: Crash Query, Network Screening, Advanced Network Screening, Safety Analysis (Explore Treatments page)

draw circle

Use the Circle Tool to filter the map to a circular area.

Adjust the radius: In the filter bar, click the default radius (250 ft) and enter a new value.

Exclude an area: Circles can also be used to exclude the selected area from the query. In the filter bar, click “inside” and change it to “outside.”

Rename a circle: Click the default name in the filter bar and type a new name (up to 59 characters).

Show labels on the map: To display circle and polygon names and areas on the map, open Map Settings and select “Show name” and “Show area (square miles).”

Download

Download - Network Screening options

(The Network Screening and Advanced Network Screening download options)

File types:

  • .png: An image of the current map view, including any applied geo boundaries, map shapes, and displayed layers or assets.

  • .shp (Crash Query): A shapefile of the current map containing the point geometry of crashes.

  • .shp (Network Screening and Advanced Network Screening): A shapefile (.zip) of your Network Screening project. The .zip file includes .prj, .dbf, .shx, and .shp files.

  • .kmz: A file containing the locations from your screening, including all segments that meet your filter criteria and all columns of data in your ranking table.

Draw Circle (shape only)

Available in: Alternative Design

Click Draw Circle to draw a circle shape on the map.

Note: Draw Circle is only available in the map view under the Project Selection tab.

Draw Rectangle (shape only)

Available in: Alternative Design

Click Draw Rectangle to draw a rectangle shape on the map.

Note: Draw Rectangle is only available in the map view under the Project Selection tab.

Filter to View

Available in: Crash Query, Network Screening, Advanced Network Screening

Filter to view

After zooming in on a location, click Filter to View to apply a filter to the area of the map currently displayed.

Layers

Available in: Crash Query, Network Screening, Advanced Network Screening, Safety Analysis (Project Overview page and Explore Treatments page), Alternative Design

Layers

Use Layers to display boundaries (such as cities, counties, and districts) and asset layers (if available for your agency) on the map. Layers respect applied filters and only display near the filtered area.

(Layers option on the crash map)

Turn on a layer: Click the Layers icon and select any available layer. Each selected layer is drawn on the map in its assigned color.

Customize a layer: Click the color box next to a layer to open its display settings flyout. From here, users can:

  • Change the color by clicking the color bar at the top of the flyout.

  • Adjust the opacity (transparency) and line width.

  • Set the zoom levels at which the layer is displayed.

Zoom levels: Zoom levels control when a layer is displayed on the map, and users can set an upper and lower zoom level for each layer. For example, setting the zoom to the State level displays the layer when the map is zoomed out to show the entire state. Lower zoom levels require the map to be zoomed in further before the layer appears. The vertical line on the zoom bar shows the map’s current zoom level.

Map labels: Point data within layers can be configured with a default map label. To change the label, edit it in the asset layer flyout. Map labels are limited to five characters.

Line Tool

Available in: Crash Query

Line Tool

Use the Line Tool to select a section of roadway. Select the road on the map, then define the beginning and ending boundaries of the section.

Note: In Safety Analysis and Alternative Design, the segment/intersection selection tool works the same way as the Line Tool.

Read more about the Line Tool here.

Map Search

Available in: Crash Query, Network Screening, Advanced Network Screening, Safety Analysis (Project Overview page and Explore Treatments page), Alternative Design

Map search

Use Map Search to find a specific location. Click the Map Search icon (magnifying glass) and enter an address, city, county, street, business, or lat/long coordinates. Results appear below the search box.

Select a result to zoom the map to that location and place a pin on it. Map Search only moves the map; it does not apply any filters.

Visualization

Available in: Crash Query, Safety Analysis (Explore Treatments page)

Choose how crashes are displayed on the map: Heatmap & Clusters or Dots. In the Dots view, each crash is shown as a dot color-coded by severity, with no grouping or clustering.

This setting is saved and applied to all map interfaces each time the user logs in.

Zoom Controls

Available in: Crash Query, Network Screening, Advanced Network Screening, Safety Analysis (Project Overview page and Explore Treatments page), Alternative Design

Auto-zoom: When on, the map automatically zooms in or out to match the extents of the available data as filters are applied or removed. This helps users zoom to a specific location or view a subset of the crash data. When off, users have full manual control over map zooming.

Switch to Satellite: When on, the map automatically switches to satellite view when zoomed in close, and back to map view when zoomed out.

Zoom Controls settings are saved as the user’s global default across all applications and applied each time they log in.

Polygon

Available in: Crash Query, Safety Analysis (Explore Treatments page)

Select “Show name” and “Show area (square miles)” to display the names and areas of added polygons and circles on the map.

Measure Tool

Available in: Crash Query, Alternative Design

Measure Tool

Use the Measure Tool to measure distances on the map. Click the Measure Tool icon, then click points on the map. The total distance between the points appears at the top of the map in both feet and miles.

To measure a shape, keep clicking on the map to add more measurement points. To exit the Measure Tool, click the Measure Tool icon again.
