The date range and the Filter Bar decide which data appears in your project. Everything else on the screen, such as the map, tables, charts, and downloads, uses only the data that matches. This article shows how to set the date range, how to add, change, and remove filters, and how the operators work.
Available in: Crash Query, Network Screening, Advanced Network Screening, Safety Analysis (Explore Treatments page), and Collision Diagrams.
You can filter on crash details (such as manner of collision), vehicle details (such as vehicle type), details about the people involved (such as injury severity), and roadway and location details (such as functional class, city, county, or route). The examples in this article are from Crash Query.
ℹ️ Note: The filters and values you see depend on your organization's setup and your permissions.
Set the Date Range
1. Click the date range in the header.
(The date range in the header)
2. Select an option:
Most Recent 5 Years: The most recent years of available data. Your organization sets how many years, so this may say something else, such as Most Recent 3 Years.
All Time: Every record in the dataset.
Other: Your own dates. Click Edit to select them.
(The Date Range options)
3. For your own dates, type a start and end date or select them on the calendars, and then click Done. The note at the bottom shows which dates the dataset covers.
(The calendars for a custom date range)
4. Click Apply.
Data outside the date range isn't included. To include it, widen the range.
ℹ️ Note: Each app can have a different default date range. That's why, when you use Open In, you may be asked which date range to use. Learn more in Open In Overview.
Filter Bar
Add a Filter
1. Click Add Filter in the Filter Bar.
(The Add Filter button)
2. Scroll the list, or type in the search box, to find the column you want, such as Weather Conditions. Then select it.
(Searching the column list for a filter)
3. Most filters default to the = operator, but they can be changed. See available Operators for different data types.
4. Select the checkbox next to each value you want to include. In Crash Query, the number next to each value is how many crashes in your current results have that value.
5. Click Apply.
(Values selected in a filter, with the Apply button)
💡 Tip: Type in the value list's search box to find a value. Long lists don't show every option when you scroll. You can also paste in a list of values copied from a CSV file.
The filter appears in the Filter Bar. The map, crash count, and Metrics Sidebar update to show only the crashes that match.
(Two filters applied, with the crash count and Metrics Sidebar showing only the filtered crashes)
ℹ️ Note: In Crash Query and Advanced Network Screening, your organization may set default filters that appear in every new project. You can edit or remove them in a project, but they come back when you start a new one.
Parts of a Filter
(The parts of a filter, numbered 1 to 4)
1 - Column: What you're filtering on. Click it to select a different column.
2 - Operator: How the filter matches. Click it to change it.
3 - Values: What you're filtering for. Click them to add or remove values.
4 - Remove (X): Removes that filter from the current query.
Operators
The operators you can select depend on the data column type. Only the ones that apply appear in the list.
Operator | Includes records where the column… |
= is | matches one of the selected values. |
≠ is not | doesn't match any of the selected values. |
< is less than | is below the value. |
≤ is less than or equal to | is the value or below it. |
> is greater than | is above the value. |
≥ is greater than or equal to | is the value or above it. |
≤≥ is between | falls between two values, including both ends. |
≤/≥ is not between | falls outside two values. |
exists | has a value. |
does not exist | is blank. |
Operators by Column Type
Column type | Operators | Example |
Text | is, is not, exists, does not exist | Weather Conditions is Snow, Rain |
Number (integer, decimal, or currency) | is, is not, is less than, is less than or equal to, is greater than, is greater than or equal to, is between, is not between, exists, does not exist | Number of Lanes is between 2 and 4 |
Date and time | is, is not, is between | Crash Date & Time (Year) is between 2022 and 2024 |
True/false | is, is not, exists, does not exist | Speeding Involved is Yes |
Geo shape | inside, outside | Crashes inside a drawn polygon or a (Geo) boundary, such as a city |
(Operators for a text column)
(Operators for a number column)
ℹ️ Note: Filters marked (Geo) work differently from other location filters. Learn more in Location Filters: Geo vs. Non-Geo Filters.
How Filters Work Together
Values in the same filter (OR): A record only needs to match one of them. For example, Weather Conditions = Snow, Rain includes crashes with snow or rain.
Separate filters (AND): A record has to match all of them. For example, Weather Conditions = Snow, Rain and Highway Type (On) = Interstate shows only snow or rain crashes that happened on an interstate.
ℹ️ Note: There are additional filter options in Network Screening and Advanced Network Screening. Learn more in the Network Screening collection.
Remove or Hide Filters
One filter: Click the X next to it.
All filters: Click the X at the far right of the Filter Bar.
When you have more than five filters applied, click Hide Filters under the Filter Bar to collapse it.
(The Hide Filters button under the Filter Bar)
The Filter Bar then shows how many filters are applied. Click Show Filters to expand it again.
(The collapsed Filter Bar with the Show Filters button)
Other Ways to Add Filters
From the Map
Draw a polygon or circle, select a stretch of road with the Line Tool, or use Filter to view. Learn more in Map Toolbar Overview.
From the Metrics Sidebar
Click a value in the Metrics Sidebar to add it as a filter. Not every metric is set up as a filter. If you're not sure, hover over the value first:
+ Add a filter appears if the value can be added as a filter.
A tooltip tells you if it can't be filtered.
(Interstate in the Metrics Sidebar, which adds the filter Highway Type (On) = Interstate)
