Arizona - ACIS Transition to AASHTOWare Safety Guide

Written by Lauren Miller

This guide helps Arizona DOT users move from ACIS to AASHTOWare Safety. It shows where to find the information from each ACIS report in Crash Query, how to set the date range, filter, and narrow crashes to a location, how to download data and reports, and how to use the templates the Arizona DOT team built to match common ACIS reports.

Where to Find ACIS Reports in Crash Query

The information in the following ACIS reports is available in Crash Query:

Set the Date Range

The date range in the top-right corner of the screen shows which dates your query includes. Crashes outside the date range aren't filtered or shown in your query. To include them, change the date range.

(The date range in Crash Query)

  1. Click the date range in the top-right corner.

  2. Under Other, click Edit.

  3. Enter the date range you want to include in your query.

  4. Click Done to apply the changes.

Filter Crashes

The Filter Bar lets you refine your query by any data point in the available crash data. You can filter by crash attributes (first harmful event, manner of collision, etc.), vehicle attributes (vehicle type, vehicle maneuver, etc.), occupant attributes (severity, number of occupants, etc.), and roadway and location attributes (roadway functional class, city, county, route, block of route, etc.).

Narrow Crashes to a Location

There are several ways to filter crash data to a specific location in Crash Query. Each option is described below.

Location Filters

Use the following filters to filter crash data to a specific location:

  • ADOT Engineering District (Geo)

  • ADOT Maintenance Unit (Geo)

  • City

  • City (Geo)

  • COG / MPO (Geo)

  • County

  • County (Geo)

  • DPS District (Geo)

  • FHWA Region (Geo)

  • Legislative District (Geo)

  • Tribal Land (Geo)

Find Local Routes With the Line Tool

For local roads, select routes from the map with the Line Tool. For divided routes, select the route with the Line Tool in each direction. The Line Tool uses the Dominant Route ID filter in Crash Query. Learn more in Crash Query - Line Tool Overview.

Find Non-Local Routes With Filters

Use the Dominant Route ID or Dominant Route ID (Decoded) filter with the Milepost and Offset filters to find non-local routes in Crash Query.

Draw a Polygon or Circle on the Map

To filter to an area on the map, draw a polygon or a circle (radius) to set its boundaries. Only crashes inside the shape are included.

Metrics Tab

The Metrics tab in the Sidebar breaks down the crashes in your current query by crash attribute. The first column shows the crash attribute, and the second shows how many crashes in your query match it. When available, a third column shows the percentage of crashes that match. Learn more in Crash Query - Metrics.

The download includes every included row, not just the 500 shown in the table, and only the columns added to the table. Learn more in Crash Query - Raw Table.

Download a PDF Report

Crash Query includes three pre-built reports: Crash Summary, Before/After, and Over-representation. Use them to export your query results as an easy-to-share PDF. Reports include a summary of the report parameters (report title, date created, created by, and report date range), the filters applied to generate the report, and any data in the Metrics tab of the current query.

1. Click the Download icon in the top-right corner of the screen.

View Charts in the Chart Builder

To view charts built in a saved query, click the Chart Builder tab in the Sidebar. The charts update to reflect the crashes in your query's current search criteria. Scroll down the Sidebar to view all charts. To download a chart as a PNG file, hover over the chart and click the download button. Learn more in Crash Query - Chart Builder Overview.

ACIS Report Templates in Crash Query

To support the move from ACIS, the Arizona DOT team created templates for common crash data processes. A template can include preset metrics, Raw Table columns formatted for download, and pre-built charts.

The templates replicate many of the queries and downloads you used in ACIS, but they're a starting point, not a limitation. AASHTOWare Safety is a self-service analysis tool: you can query, analyze, and explore the data however your work needs, rather than only reproducing the downloads and reports you ran in ACIS.

Find and Use a Template

1. From Crash Query, click the Home icon in the top-left corner of the screen.

Home icon highlighted next to the Crash Query app menu

(The Home icon in Crash Query)

2. Select Templates in the left-hand menu to view the available templates.

(The Templates category on the Crash Query home page)

3. Click a template name to open it.

4. Click Make a Copy in the top-right toolbar.

Make a copy before you change the template. Your edits are saved to your copy, and the original template doesn't change. Learn more about your library of saved queries in Navigating Applications and Managing Saved Projects.
